Viking Oval Brooch Assemblage (2018)

Two decorated bronze oval brooches found with a glass bead and belt fittings in December 2018 and declared Treasure in July 2020.

Also recorded as: John Crowe and Craig Evans brooches; 2018 Viking brooches

What the evidence supports

MNH reports that the brooches carry silver-wire decoration and were the first examples of their type found on the Isle of Man. They were declared Treasure in July 2020. A targeted archaeological excavation found no grave, so this record does not present a burial as proven. Neither official announcement publishes the findspot and this record supplies no geometry.

Legal note

On the Isle of Man, metal-detector use in a protected area requires written Manx National Heritage consent, and digging or excavation on any land to search for archaeological objects requires an MNH licence. Landowner permission alone is not enough.
